Project 5: Neurodegenerative conditions and co-occurring conditions – setting priorities
Background:
Neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s often coincide with other health issues, known as comorbidities, which can worsen outcomes. These comorbidities can lead to faster decline, hinder access to treatment, and worsen overall health. People with neurodegenerative diseases might also face delays in getting a diagnosis or treatment for additional health problems, which can make their condition worse. Understanding how neurodegenerative diseases and comorbidities interact is crucial for improving the lives of those affected.
Aims and objectives:
This research aims to answer several key questions:
- How do common mental and physical conditions relate to different neurodegenerative diseases?
- Which conditions affect outcomes, like disability and mortality, in different neurodegenerative diseases?
- How do health inequalities and treatment access affect these relationships?
- Which conditions should we prioritise when considering how to improve care for people with a neurodegenerative disease who also have another health condition?
Methods:
The study will use large databases like the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) and UK Biobank to examine the links between having other health conditions at the same time as a neurodegenerative condition and wellbeing. This includes looking at mortality and disability. We will compare how patients with and without a neurodegenerative disease experience common health conditions, such as asthma and diabetes, and whether factors like ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and urban/rural living affect this.
Policy relevance and dissemination:
This research will inform policymakers and commissioners, such as those implementing the NHS Long Term plan and the Neuroscience Transformation Programme. By highlighting the importance of screening and treating comorbidities, the study aims to inform policy and care practices to improve the health and wellbeing of people living with a neurodegenerative disease and other health conditions. We will engage with parliamentary groups, healthcare bodies, and the public. Our goal is to enhance screening, prevention, and treatment of comorbidities in neurodegenerative diseases, leading to more effective and equitable care.
